Sound/Spelling Correspondences is a tool for teachers and/or adults so that:
Primer Level comprises the first words children are expected to learn; they are words in children's spoken vocabularies and are grouped so that the words easiest to learn are presented first. Each word is introduced in a sentence and students are asked to identify its definition. Teacher notes provide organizing principles for each lesson.
Level One words are a continuation of words expected to be known by academically successful students. Each word is introduced in a sentence and students are asked to identify its definition and write sentences. The words are grouped so that there are organizing principles explained in teacher notes. Supplementary lessons targeting grammatical elements and weekly homework worksheets for spelling are provided.
Level Two words are a continuation of words expected to be known by academically successful students. Vocabulary work consists of identifying meanings of the spelling words and writing sentences. The words are grouped according to organizing principles explained in teacher notes. Supplementary lessons targeting grammatical elements and weekly homework worksheets for spelling are provided.
Level Three words are a continuation of words expected to be known by academically successful students. Vocabulary work consists of identifying meanings of the spelling words and writing sentences. The words are grouped according to organizing principles explained in teacher notes. Supplementary lessons targeting grammatical elements and weekly homework worksheets for spelling are provided. Because there are 30 words at each level, teachers select up to 20 for weekly lessons. A "Matrix" sheet of all 30 words is available for applying grammatical elements in whole-class instruction.
The Spelling Review encompasses preparation for spelling and reading words of advanced English. The words are grouped according to organizing principles explained in teacher notes. The irregularities at this advanced level are relatively few, and they are systematic, meaning that patterns repeat. Once the patterns are recognized,spelling is easier. Coolest of all, this knowledge helps with learning vocabulary that in turn, helps with spelling and reading comprehension.
The MCUW 300 consists of phonetically-irregular and phonetically equivocal spellings among the 600 Most Commonly Used Words. These words are familiar to most; therefore, no vocabulary work is included.
Levels 4, 5, and 6 of The Spell of Language target vocabulary development expected of accomplished students in these grades using spelling and understanding of the morphological nature of English, that is, how units of meaning are combined. Instruction in grammatical elements is continued. Rather than providing phonetic analyses of all words, sound-structure elements that are remarkable are noted.
